Horses Stabbed at Las Vegas Barrel Racing Event: Teen Suspect in Custody

A disturbing act of animal cruelty shocked the barrel racing community on Saturday, May 30, when three horses were stabbed inside the equestrian barns at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa during the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) Supershow in Las Vegas. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), officers arrived shortly after 2 a.m. to find the animals suffering from injuries inflicted by a sharp object, later believed to be a knife.

A Teen Competitor Identified as the Suspect

Through security footage and investigative work by the LVMPD Animal Cruelty Section, detectives identified a teenage girl-herself a competitor at the event-as the primary suspect. Authorities believe she used a knife to inflict multiple wounds on the horses, all of whom were housed in stalls at the South Point's equestrian facility. The suspect was located at a nearby hotel and taken into custody without incident. She was transported to Clark County Juvenile Hall.

The teen now faces 12 counts of willful or malicious killing, maiming, or torturing an animal, along with three counts of felony malicious destruction of private property valued at more than $5,000.

Condition of the Horses

While the injuries were described as non-life-threatening, all three horses required veterinary treatment and were unable to continue competing in the NBHA Supershow. Owners Hailey Krahenbuhl, Arielle Phillips, and Keira Weisbart each confirmed publicly that their horses-Sully, Detail, and Rocket-sustained multiple stab wounds. All are expected to recover with ongoing care.

The NBHA issued a statement calling the attack an isolated incident and confirmed that the suspect was immediately removed and placed in the care of authorities. Event organizers, South Point security, and LVMPD coordinated closely to ensure the safety of all remaining horses and participants.
