June 16, 2026 – TANNER, Ala – John Wahl has won the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. Wahl – the Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party until late January – defeated Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen in the Republican primary runoff.
Wes Allen received 132,625 votes - 43.01%. Wahl received 175,724 votes - 56.99%.
"This campaign is about the people of Alabama," said Wahl. "And that is what has made this campaign different. It's a movement and it's a movement for change."
"We are going to work with Senator Tommy Tuberville as the next Governor of the state of Alabama. And we are going to work with him as Lieutenant Governor to change Alabama forever."
Wahl was endorsed by President Donald J. Trump (R). Trump also endorsed Congressman Barry Moore in the U.S. Senate race. Both won their races. Wahl thanked President Trump for his support and endorsement.
The Allen campaign had attacked Wahl's Alabama residency, his understanding of state government, and even accused him of having Muslim friends and a pet raccoon named Charlie. None of it sticked.
Wahl grew up on a farm in Limestone County. He has made a name for himself as a butterfly farmer, pollster, and businessman. The Republican State Executive Committee elected him as Vice Chairman of the Party. When his term as Vice Chair ended, he was elected unanimously as Republican Party Chairman and re-elected twice. In tht role he got to know both President Trump and his girlfriend former Senate staffer Britney Montgomery – who has played a major role in this campaign.
Wahl and Montgomery have announced plans to marry in July.
Only 308,349 votes were cast in the race. There were 408,740 votes total between the Republican and Democratic primaries combined – even though Alabama has 3,812,426 total registered voters – a 10.72% turnout that was better than many early objections.
Wahl will face State Representative Phillip Ensler (D) in the November 3 general election.
