Tragic Loss: Bishop Osório Citora Found Dead in Suspected Brutal Murder

MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE - The Catholic community and the nation of Mozambique are mourning the sudden and tragic death of Bishop Osório Citora of Quelimane.

In the early hours of June 6, 2026, the 54-year-old bishop was found dead inside the episcopal residence in what local authorities are treating as a suspected act of brutal murder.

According to reports from the international Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), Bishop Osório, a member of the Consolata Missionaries, was discovered in a corridor of the residence. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest near the heart.

A Nation in Shock and Uncertainty

The circumstances surrounding the bishop's death remain highly unclear, and the identity of the attacker is currently unknown. Investigators have released very few details to the public, and no motive for the attack has been established.

Archbishop Inácio Saure of Nampula, President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, confirmed the grim discovery. He stated that the bishop was found "lifeless and in strange circumstances that have yet to be clarified," underscoring the deep uncertainty and shock gripping the local church.

In response to the tragedy, the Presidency of Mozambique issued a formal statement expressing "deep sorrow and consternation." President Daniel Chapo described Bishop Osório's death as an "irreparable loss" for both the nation and the global Catholic community. President Chapo highlighted the bishop's lifelong dedication to humility, pastoral service, and his relentless promotion of peace and reconciliation.

Church Under Pressure Amid Growing Insecurity

This high-profile killing comes at a time of continued instability and sporadic violence across several regions of Mozambique. The northern province of Cabo Delgado, in particular, has faced years of repeated attacks on civilians and religious infrastructure by armed insurgent groups.

Recent months have seen the destruction of multiple churches, mission buildings, and schools, further straining already vulnerable local communities. While Quelimane is located south of the primary conflict zone of Cabo Delgado, the bishop's violent death highlights the pervasive insecurity that religious figures and civilians face throughout the country.

Mozambique remains a major focus of international humanitarian concern. Organizations like Aid to the Church in Need continue to fund local pastoral care and social reconstruction efforts. This latest tragedy adds a heavy burden to the challenges facing the Mozambican Church, which continues to operate on the frontlines of humanitarian and spiritual care despite ongoing security threats.
