Man Shot by Police in Carbon Hill; SBI Launches Investigation

July 8, 2026 - CARBON HILL, Ala. - A man was shot and killed by a Carbon Hill police officer earlier today during an encounter that state investigators are now working to piece together, according to preliminary information released by authorities.

The incident occurred late Wednesday morning in a residential area near downtown Carbon Hill. Police say officers were responding to a call involving a disturbance when they encountered the man, whose identity has not yet been publicly released. What happened next remains under investigation, but officials confirmed that at least one Carbon Hill officer fired their weapon, striking the man.

He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has taken over the case, which is standard procedure for officer‑involved shootings in the state. SBI agents spent much of the afternoon interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and reviewing any available video footage from the scene.

Local officials have not released details about what led to the shooting, whether the man was armed, or how many officers were involved. The Carbon Hill Police Department referred all questions to ALEA, which said more information will be released once investigators complete initial interviews.

Residents in the area reported seeing a heavy police presence shortly after the shooting, with several streets temporarily blocked as investigators worked.

Once SBI completes its investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Walker County District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether the shooting was justified under Alabama law.

The name of the officer involved has not been released. No officers were reported injured.

This is a developing story, and updates are expected as investigators confirm additional details
