MONTGOMERY, Ala. Meta today announced a series of major artificial intelligence initiatives designed to ensure the benefits of AI are broadly shared, including a new $1 billion community investment fund, expanded open-source AI models, and a long-term vision centered on empowering individuals through artificial intelligence.
In a new essay, The Future is for Everyone: The Path to a Positive AI Future, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlines the company's vision for making personal superintelligence widely available rather than concentrated in the hands of a few organizations.
"We propose a philosophy based on individual empowerment as the source of prosperity, invention as the primary purpose of superintelligence, and balance of power as the foundation of safety," Zuckerberg wrote.
As part of that vision, Zuckerberg announced the creation of the Future is for Everyone Fund, a new $1 billion initiative that will invest directly in communities where Meta owns and operates data centers. The fund will support local priorities such as teachers, first responders, energy and water infrastructure, and other community needs. The initiative was inspired by Meta's experience in Richland Parish, Louisiana, where the company's investment helped provide bonuses for local educators.
The new commitment builds on Meta's longstanding investment in Alabama communities. To date, Meta has contributed more than $75 million to approximately 3,000 community projects supporting schools, nonprofits, and local organizations in communities where the company operates data centers or data center projects, including Montgomery.
Meta also partners with Montgomery Public Schools to support the district's robotics initiative, helping expand digital literacy and provide hands-on STEM learning opportunities for K-12 students across the community.
In addition to the community investment fund, Meta announced the release of new open-source artificial intelligence models. The company is making available the weights for Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter dense model capable of running on a laptop or single consumer GPU while delivering leading performance in its class. Meta also announced plans to release the weights for Muse Spark 1.2 in the coming weeks, one of the world's leading foundation models.
Throughout his essay, Zuckerberg argues that artificial intelligence should be developed in ways that empower individuals, promote innovation, and avoid concentrating technological power.
Among the key principles outlined in The Future is for Everyone:
• Individual empowerment should be the foundation of economic prosperity.
• Artificial intelligence should be designed to help people invent, create, and achieve more-not simply automate existing work.
• Open-source AI promotes innovation, transparency, and broader access while helping prevent excessive concentration of technological power.
• Strong checks and balances should guide the safe development and deployment of advanced AI systems.
• Communities that host AI infrastructure should directly benefit from the investments those facilities generate.
"Open source is a positive and important force for both empowering people and preventing centralization that is detrimental for both safety and the economy," Zuckerberg wrote.
Meta says its vision is built on the belief that open AI-rather than closed, centralized AI systems-offers the best path toward ensuring artificial intelligence benefits individuals, communities, and society as a whole.
