Ammie Akin wins Republican Nominee for Alabama's 7th Congressional District: Pivots to general election campaign

August 11, 2026 - BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-Ammie Akin has secured the Republican nomination for Alabama's 7th Congressional District.

Akin received 73.37% of the vote (9,312 votes) over David W. Perry with 26.63% (3,380 votes).

Aikin now is transitioning to face incumbent Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-Selma) in November.

"I'm excited to take this campaign directly to the people of the 7th District, and I look forward to earning their trust and serving as their next congresswoman after the November 3 election," said Aikin in her victory speech.

Aikin has a background in education, entrepreneurship, and community service. Akin promises to bring a fresh perspective and a renewed commitment to representing the people of the Seventh District.

"I want to thank the people of Alabama's 7th Congressional District for entrusting me with the Republican nomination," Akin said. "I look forward to sharing a new vision for our district in Congress. For far too long, the people of this district have lacked proactive representation they deserve in Washington, D.C."

Aikin faces a real challenge attempting to unseat eight term incumbent Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-Selma). The district has become slightly more Republican friendly after the Supreme Court allowed the state to use its own 2023 map instead of one drawn by a court appointed special master, but CD7 is still majority Black and has been a safe Democratic seat since 1992.

Akin has been praised by her Republican supporters for stepping up to face the challenge.

"Dwight D. Eisenhower's wisdom holds true tonight. 'The world moves, and ideas that were once good are not always good," said Akin. "Congresswoman Sewell has been in office for over 15 years, and during that time we have seen our industries, agriculture, and many of our communities struggle," Akin said. "The people of the 7th District deserve a representative who is innovative, forward-thinking, and courageous in keeping America's values at the forefront of this district. I will campaign tirelessly to earn the trust of every voter, and when elected, I will make sure Alabama's 7th Congressional District is never taken for granted."

Akin stated that her campaign will focus on delivering responsive leadership, strengthening economic opportunity, supporting Alabama's agricultural and industrial sectors, and ensuring the voices of the people of the 7th District are heard in Washington.

Akin says that she has an Alabama First Agenda including:

- Put Alabama First by prioritizing families, workers, small businesses, and local communities over politics.

- Fight wasteful Washington spending and demand responsible, accountable use of taxpayer dollars.

- Cut red tape so Alabama businesses can grow, create jobs, and compete.

- Strengthen rural healthcare by improving access to quality care and helping rural hospitals stay open.

- Grow rural Alabama by supporting agriculture, timber, job creation, and policies that keep families rooted in their communities.

- Strengthen education by building a true partnership between educators, parents, and the community so every child has the opportunity to succeed.

- Expand broadband access so students, patients, workers, and small businesses are not left behind.

- Invest in modern infrastructure that supports economic development, safer roads, and a better quality of life.

- Support law enforcement, first responders, and the military with the resources they need to keep our communities safe and our nation secure.

- Deliver commonsense results by listening first, solving real problems, and fighting for the people of Alabama.

"Representation should deliver measurable results, not continued decline," declared Akin. "It's time to focus on solutions that strengthen our communities, expand opportunity, and help Alabama's 7th Congressional District thrive.."

Ammie Akin is a career educator, entrepreneur, and community builder who lives in Birmingham, Alabama. She is the co-founder of Hub in the Hills and serves as board chair of Unless U, a nonprofit supporting adults with disabilities. She is also a wife and mother of three, She has a Doctor of Education from Samford University and has spent nearly 25 years working in Alabama's schools, nonprofits, and communities.
