Voters in Congressional Districts 1,2,6, and 7 go to the polls today for special congressional primaries

MONTGOMERY, Ala - Voters in four of Alabama's congressional districts go the polls Tuesday to pick their nominees for the Congress for November ballot. There is a Democratic Primary in Congressional District 6. There are Republican Primaries in Congressional District 6, 7, 1, and 2.

The congressional maps changed after the U.S. Supreme Court found in favor of the state of Alabama and allowed a 2023 map prepared by the Alabama Legislature to take effect, replacing the map prepared by a court appointed special master. For this reason, the May 19 primary results in the four affected district were nullified and a do-over was called.

Congressman Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) is the Democratic Party nominee in District 2.

Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-Selma) is the Democratic Party nominee in District 7.

Clyde Jones is the Democratic nominee in District 1.

Democrats in those three districts have no primary and no reason to go to the polls today.

Democrats in District 6 do have a contested primary between: Jacob Bouma-Sims, Ashtyn Kennedy, Maurice Mercer, and Keith Pilkington.

On the Republican side there are four contested primaries in Districts 1, 2, 6, and 7.

In the First Congressional District, former Congressman Jerry Carl faces former Navy pilot John Mills and Air Force veteran Austin Sidwell will vie for the Republican nomination.

In the Second Congressional District, six candidates are running for the Republican nomination.

These are State Rep. Rhett Marques, real estate broker and attorney Hampton Harris, talk radio host Christian Horn, former Trump administration official David Matthews, former Green Beret Joshua McKee and Marine veteran James Richardson.

In the Sixth Congressional District incumbent Congressman Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) faces a fierce primary challenge from healthcare professional Case Dixon.

In the Seventh Congressional District Principal Ammie Akin faces Pastor David Perry.

Because of the abbreviated schedule there will be no primary runoffs even if the first place finisher has less than 50 percent of the vote. This is a winner take all primary.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must bring a valid photo ID with them to the polls.
