UAH enrollment grows for first time in six years, driven by gains in new students

August 25, 2026 - HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – There is new momentum at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) as more students choose to become Chargers. While official fall enrollment numbers will be announced later this fall, early indicators are encouraging, with strong gains among new undergraduate and graduate students.

New first-year undergraduate enrollment is currently up 5%, while new graduate enrollment is up 6.5%. Total university enrollment is projected to increase 2% to approximately 8,529 students, which would mark UAH's first overall enrollment increase in six years. Overall undergraduate enrollment is currently up 2.5%. UAH is a part of The University of Alabama System.

"This is an exciting moment for UAH because these numbers show that our enrollment strategy is working," said Dr. Michael Poll, vice president for enrollment management at UAH. "Through our strategic enrollment roadmap, we have been very intentional about how we engage with students and families, and we are seeing the results in the number of students choosing UAH."

For undergraduate recruitment, UAH has focused on providing high-touch, personalized guidance throughout the enrollment process, strategically leveraging scholarship resources, strengthening relationships with high school counselors and enhancing the campus visit experience.

The university also has expanded its graduate enrollment efforts through personalized communication and by highlighting the quality and relevance of its graduate programs. The university launched the Charger EDGE initiative in 2025 and expanded the program earlier this year: Alumni EDGE provides tuition discounts to UAH alumni pursuing graduate education, while the Community Partnerships incentive program offers discounts to employees of participating community organizations. In addition, UAH revamped its graduate recruitment communications and enrollment strategy to provide prospective students with more individualized support and clearer information about graduate programs.

"We know students have choices, and we want to make sure they have the information, support and experience they need to make UAH their choice," Poll said. "The growth in our first-year class is especially encouraging because it tells us that our message is resonating with students."

The enrollment gains come amid a challenging higher education environment, and reflect growing demand for UAH's high-quality, career-relevant programs and strong connections to the industries and organizations that define Huntsville and North Alabama. As the university continues its enrollment efforts, prospective students and families are invited to experience UAH for themselves through campus visits, events and opportunities to connect with the Charger community.

"We are encouraged by the momentum we are seeing across the university," Poll said. "Our goal is not simply to grow enrollment. It is to attract students who recognize the quality and relevance of a UAH education and who will thrive here. These results give us a strong foundation to continue that work."

Official fall 2026 enrollment figures will be announced later this fall following the university's enrollment census.
