The people's voice of reason
(August 12, 2024) The 2024 Paris Olympics are done! Compared to the blasphemous crime against good taste that was the opening, the closing ceremonies were rather plain, verging on boring. Yes, there was the Tom Cruise stunt, which is undoubtedly part of the marketing for Mission Impossible 37, or whatever number they’re up to. The fireworks were not terribly impressive, nor was the National Anthem done by some artist I’ve never heard of (and quite frankly, won’t be looking for on Spotify).
Now the Olympic flag has been passed to Los Angeles, which is already getting ready for 2028. I can’t help but wonder what they’re working on for their opening ceremony. Given LA’s history, demographics and ethos, and a burning desire to show up Paris with an even grander spectacle, I’m sure it’s gonna be awesome!
Maybe the LA Olympics will revive the spirit of the Aztecs and reenact a ceremony to the Sun God? Because nothing really says international cooperation and competition like a few thousand human sacrifices. Best of all, it won’t offend the Muslims—the French learned their lesson about that from Charlie Hebdo, obviously.
Judging by the lame apologies after the Paris opening, they’re well aware that offending Christians is no big deal. Make of that what you will.
So, another Olympics come and gone. Medals were won, records were broken and set (I suppose—I didn’t watch or follow the events because if it’s not SEC I really don’t care). There were a couple of scandals like the cardboard beds, mysterious illnesses in the Olympic Village and the “defecate in the Seine” prank to protest the billions spent to clean up the river enough to swim in.
It’s been illegal to swim in the Seine for 101 years, but some bright bulb decided a couple of billion euros spent to make it swimmable for the Olympics was a good investment. Apparently others disagreed, and the Belgium team withdrew from the Triathlon when one of their swimmers got sick. The AI picture of toilets along the bank didn’t help, either.
Only one participant, the coach of the Samoan boxing team died “Suddenly.” We have no way of knowing just how many potential Olympians weren’t in Paris because of Suddenly or other totally not jab-related injuries, because as we all know, the vaccines are safe and effective. Totally. Because Trust The Science.
On the plus side, members of the French team have given many of us a new appreciation for the “skills” involved in swimming and pole vaulting. Vive la France!
One of the biggest controversies of this Olympics concerned women’s boxing. The IOC allowed two XY trans women to compete against XX women, with completely predictable results: the XXers got the snot beaten out of them.
This whole kerfuffle reminds me of the spat over “Islam is right about women.” Both put the wokies into an existential logical bind. With the Islam/women statement, if you refute it you’re Islamophobic. If you agree with it, you're misogynistic. With the boxers, you either acknowledge that there are definite differences between XX and XY (which blows the whole “gender is a social construct” nonsense out of the water) or you’re transphobic.
And before you start accusing me of being any or all of these things, let me remind you that as a grumpy old misanthrope, I hate everyone equally. I don’t discriminate, and I work hard to be scrupulously fair in loathing you all identically.
How many times have we seen XY trans women easily smoke XXers in sports or other physical contests? How many times has the military had to “adjust” physical qualifications for XXers? And seriously, when was the last time an XY by birth had a real menstrual cycle in the absence of massive pharmacologic intervention? Even then, where did it come from? Without a uterus, it’s a trick of endocrinological science—nothing more, nothing less.
If this were just happening in the Olympics, I can’t say I’d much care. Not my thing, no dog in that hunt, too much to worry about here at home. However, there’s a concern that it poses a risk to sports here in the USA at the high school and collegiate levels, and that’s something I do care about.
An acquaintance (he probably won’t consider me a friend after he reads this) sent me a text last week asking me to send a letter to the NCAA asking them to reject Biden’s Title IX changes. He was even kind enough to send a form letter I could copy and paste, to make it easier on me:
"The NCAA needs to stand hard against the Biden Administration’s revisions to Title IX law.
“The administration’s revision of Title IX is an absolute abomination.
“The NCAA must adopt this or a very similar policy: “All athletes may participate in NCAA male sports, but only athletes whose biological sex at birth is female will be allowed to participate in women’s sports.”
“If you do not adopt such a policy, women will be forced out of women’s sports. They are already being forced out, as the example of Lia Thomas and Riley Gaines demonstrates.
“I have seen serious injuries of girls/women playing sports against boys/men. The policy I suggest is fair to everyone and recognizes men and women are different. Medicine and/or counseling cannot make them the same.
“Please stand up and stop this madness."
I do appreciate him sending the form letter, but I would never send it “as is” for two reasons: mass form letters don’t have the same impact as unique letters, and it’s far too liberal for my tastes.
Note how he unabashedly discriminates against boys: “All athletes may participate in NCAA male sports, but only athletes whose biological sex at birth is female will be allowed to participate in women’s sports.”
Double standard, much? I thought the whole point of having boy’s and girls’ sports separate was because boys and girls (XY and XX) are different. Either they are, or they are not. Can’t have it both ways—which is, of course, what the XX set wants: equal treatment…until it’s to their advantage to get UNequal treatment.
Sorry, Charlene; I can see the toxic feminism here even if you can’t (or won’t). No. No. Nope.
When I send my letter, I’ll change it to something like “All athletes must participate in the sports appropriate to their birth gender or karyotype.” Period.
I will use the app my friend suggested, because it’s a quick and easy way to send physical letters to governmental leaders who need an earful. The rule of thumb is that 1 letter represents 100 voters with similar views. Emails or a few lines typed into a contact form just don’t have the same impact.
The app is KwikLetter (links below) and is simple and convenient to use. The price per letter is quite reasonable, especially compared to what a pain it is to write a letter, print the letter, find the address, dig out an envelope, look for a stamp, go to the Post Office…who needs all that grief? I certainly don’t. Best of all, you can send the same letter to several people at once, which is really helpful when lots of politicians need to know how you feel.
Full disclosure: I get NOTHING from this app. I do know one of the developers, but he’s never bought me so much as a coffee, much less lunch.
As soon as I saw the first form letter, Evil Bill decided to have some fun with it. This is how he changed it. Can you spot the difference?
"The NCAA needs to vigorously support the Biden Administration’s revisions to Title IX law.
“The Administration’s revision of Title IX is an absolute affirmation of modern understanding of gender identity, and represents the next logical step towards fifth-wave feminism.
“The NCAA must NEVER adopt this or any similar, deplorably regressive, patriarchy-centric policy: “All athletes may participate in NCAA male sports, but only athletes whose biological sex at birth is female will be allowed to participate in wymon’s sports.
“If you adopt such a policy, wymon will be forced out of wymon’s sports. Some regressive-minded individuals have already been forced out, as the example of Lia and Riley Gaines demonstrates. We can only hope that this trend of cleansing wymon’s sports by removing such outmoded, trad-embracing persons will not only continue, but accelerate.
“I have seen serious injuries of trad girls/women playing sports against the brave trans wymons who are embracing zeir true identities, and feel that the injured should bear their wounds with pride as a necessary pain for the transformation of society which that pain represents. The policy that has been suggested to counter the Administration’s brave stance is not just reactionary but cis-normative in the extreme. The very idea that men and wymon are different is anathema to anyone with an understanding of current gender/queer theory. Medicine and/or counseling can indeed adjust one’s physical corpus to match one’s inner perceptions, and we should acknowledge and embrace this fact.
“Please stand up and support this essential step towards true equality, inclusion and diversity.”
Evil Bill may have been having a bit too much fun arguing with wokies online. He’s gotten surprisingly good at mimicking their language and spouting it back at them to wreck their arguments and hurt their wittle feewings.
Good Bill read it, rolled his eyes and went back to scrolling on X.
Again, this isn’t something I’d send “as is,” but I’d bet the NCAA is getting a lot of letters like this one, too.
If letting XYs beat the stuffing out of XXers, either literally or by performance, is an issue to you, make your feelings known! I’ve given you the tools you need. What you do now is up to you.
Me, I’ll send a letter opposing Biden’s ridiculous Title IX changes, knowing full well that unless thousands of people do the same it won’t mean a damn thing. The few XXers who’ve stood up (or been knocked down) aren’t enough to move the needle of public opinion. Yet. Give us a few dozen more, especially if there’s lots of blood and a bone or three sticking through skin—that’ll get people’s attention!
Is that horrible? Yep. It’s also true. After all, it’s not like a girl getting beat to a bloody pulp by a boy in a dress is worth more than a couple of days' notice by the media. It’s not like somebody drew an unflattering picture of Mohammed or anything, is it?
Just sayin’.
