July 27, 2025 - SCOTTSBORO, AL - A tense manhunt in Jackson County has ended with the capture of Daniel Victor McCarn, 29, the suspect accused of shooting a Scottsboro Police Department officer early Saturday morning. The incident began around 12:49 a.m. when officers responded to a domestic disturbance on Ruth Street.
McCarn fled the scene in a vehicle, leading police on a chase that ended in a crash near U.S. Highway 72 and County Park Road. Upon exiting the vehicle, McCarn allegedly opened fire, striking one officer before escaping on foot. The injured officer, a veteran of the force, was transported to Huntsville Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition following a medical procedure.
Blue Alert Issued
ALEA's Fusion Center issued a Blue Alert, warning the public that McCarn was armed and dangerous. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt, black shorts, and no shoes, and reportedly walks with a limp.
Multi-Agency Search Effort
The search involved ALEA, FBI, U.S. Marshals, ATF, and local law enforcement. Businesses such as Bruce's Foodland and Cloverdale Rehabilitation Center delayed operations due to safety concerns. U.S. Highway 72 was closed in both directions for much of Saturday.
Drone Technology Leads to Arrest
At 9:56 p.m., a business owner on Old Larkinsville Road spotted McCarn on security footage. Officers deployed a FLIR-equipped drone to detect body heat near railroad tracks. A team of 6–8 officers moved in and arrested McCarn without incident.
Scottsboro Police Lt. Coty Durham described McCarn as silent and expressionless during the arrest. McCarn has been booked into the Jackson County Detention Center on felony charges.
Authorities have not released the name of the injured officer but confirmed his injuries are non-life-threatening and that he is expected to recover.
