August 26, 2025 – MOODY, AL. – Voters went to the polls and elected city councilman Nick Rutledge as the next Mayor of Moody. Rutledge beat businessman David Howard in a hard-fought contest.
Rutledge received 1263 votes (57 percent) versus Howard's 965 votes (43 percent).
Moody is in St. Clair County where it lies on the economic engine that is Interstate 20. Moody is part of the Birmingham/Hoover MSA. Since 2000, Moody has grown from 8,250 residents to 13,595 people today – a growth rate of 2.8% a year.
Rutledge is pro-growth but in a responsible and controlled way.
Rutledge has emphasized his commitment to "protecting what makes Moody special while preparing for the opportunities ahead," highlighting his focus on balancing development with community values.
"We must foster economic development by creating a business-friendly environment that encourages smart growth and innovation," Rutledge said in a statement, "Great schools are the backbone of a strong growing community, and they are key to the future we all envision for Moody."
Despite being very low crime overall Moody has lost two police officers in the line of duty – in both cases the perpetrators were persons from outside of the community who came to the city with evil intent. Making sure that Moody's officers are appropriately compensated for their service has been a key issue in this election.
"I will remain a steadfast supporter of our outstanding police chief and fire chief, and of the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect the people of Moody," Rutledge said, "We must ensure that our first responders have the tools, resources, and support they need."
The seat became open with incumbent Mayor Joe Lee decided not to seek a seventh term as Mayor. Lee served as mayor since 2003. He spent 11 years as a city councilman prior to that.
In the council races challenger Wes Harrell unseated incumbent councilman Lynn Taylor.
Longtime incumbent councilwoman Linda Crowe held off a fierce challenge from Brandy Gibson. Crowe had 1,272 votes (57.8%) to Gibson's 927 (42.2%).
Challenger Wes Harrell unseated incumbent councilman Lynn Taylor. Harrell received 1,227 votes (57.7%) to Taylor's 900 (42.3%).
