Tuberville says that he has to jog with a golf club due to violence on D.C. streets: Supports Trump's use of the National Guard

September 3, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined fellow Republican lawmakers this week in a press conference supporting former President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to Washington, D.C., amid rising concerns over crime and urban decay. Tuberville also co-introduced the CLEAN D.C. Act alongside Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), a legislative proposal aimed at bolstering law enforcement capabilities in the nation’s capital.

The press conference follows weeks of Democratic criticism over Trump’s intervention in D.C., which Tuberville described as “long overdue” and emblematic of broader leadership failures in major urban centers.

“If you don’t have safe streets and neighborhoods, you have nothing,” Tuberville said, emphasizing public safety as the foundation of civic life.

A Senator’s Personal Observations

Tuberville, who has served in the Senate since 2021, painted a stark picture of daily life in Washington. He recounted carrying a golf club while jogging near the Capitol due to repeated encounters with individuals he described as mentally ill or homeless.

“It all goes back to one thing: leadership,” he said. “Leadership of a mayor, leadership of a city council. They should be embarrassed.”

Expanding Federal Intervention

According to Tuberville, Trump has signaled plans to expand National Guard deployments to other cities, including Chicago. Tuberville welcomed the move, calling it a necessary step to restore law and order in urban areas governed by Democratic leadership.

“The cavalry is coming,” he said. “The people in this country deserve help.”

Tuberville concluded his remarks with a call for Democrats to “stand up for the rule of law,” urging bipartisan support for public safety initiatives.
