Congressman Gary Palmer Blames Senate Democrats for Federal Shutdown, Vows Continued Constituent Services

October 1, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Gary Palmer (R-AL06) is sounding the alarm over a federal government shutdown he says could have been avoided. In a recent email to constituents titled “Dear Friend,” Palmer criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting a short-term funding measure and emphasized his office’s commitment to staying open during the shutdown.

A “Clean CR” Blocked in the Senate

Palmer explained that nearly two weeks ago, he voted for a clean, nonpartisan continuing resolution (CR) designed to keep the government funded for seven additional weeks. The CR, he said, contained no partisan riders and was intended to give the House Appropriations Committee time to complete its work.

“This CR had no partisan agenda items attached to it; its only goal was to ensure the government stayed open,” Palmer wrote.

According to Palmer, Senate Democrats refused to support the measure, preventing it from reaching the 60-vote threshold required for passage. He accused them of prioritizing political goals over public service, citing demands for $1.5 trillion in additional spending, the repeal of the Rural Health Transformation Fund, and taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants.

Shutdown Impacts for Alabama Families

Palmer’s email also outlined the immediate effects of the shutdown on federal services, especially for Alabamians planning trips to Washington, D.C.:

• Canceled tours: U.S. Capitol, FBI Headquarters, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, White House, and Library of Congress

• Smithsonian museums: Open until at least Monday, October 6

• Flag requests: Temporarily suspended

Despite the shutdown, Palmer assured constituents that his offices will remain open to assist with casework and answer questions.

“If you have any questions about how the shutdown will affect your day-to-day life, please visit this page on my website,” he wrote. “If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Alabama Context and Outreach

Palmer’s message arrives as many Alabama families face uncertainty over federal services, including USDA programs, VA benefits, and Social Security processing. His emphasis on rural health funding and immigration policy may resonate with voters in Jefferson and Shelby counties, where healthcare access and border security remain top concerns.

For educators, landowners, and local officials, Palmer’s office remains a resource for navigating shutdown-related delays in federal grants, permitting, and agency communication.
