September 30, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. -U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Alabama) participated in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on crime in which she blamed soft on crime Democratic mayors and district attorneys for the lawlessness that has become endemic in dozens of major American cities.
"The problem that we're facing today was created by blue cities," said Sen. Britt. "Whether it's cashless bail policies, downgrading classifications of whole categories of crimes, undermining rights and protections afforded by law enforcement officers like we saw in D.C. in 2022 ... Or creating systems to ensure pretrial releases of even the most violent offenders."
Witnesses in the hearing included Ms. Forlesia Cook, whose 22-year-old grandson was shot and killed in Washington, D.C. in 2017
"Your grandson should still be with us today," said Britt. "And we need to utilize every tool in our toolbox to make sure that that is the reality for another grandmother somewhere in D.C. or wherever across this country."
Sen. Britt spoke to Newsmax that same day.
"There is no doubt we are in this position because Democrats care more about politics than they do about the American people," Britt said.
Murder and mayhem have become common place in many American cities, including in Birmingham, Al which set a new all time record for homicides in 2024.
Americans insist on purchasing illegal drugs in incredible quantities. This underground economy fuels increasingly violent drug gangs and cartels who supply the drugs. Disputes between gangs are settled usually with gun violence and that culture of kill or be killed breeds a general disregard for the lives of other people or their property. The violence in America's most dangerous cities often spills over into the suburban and rural communities. A retired veterinarian in Auburn was stabbed to death recently by a miscreant from Montgomery who chose a park in Auburn to hunt for new victims.
America as a whole – and Alabama as well - has a shortage of prison space making it difficult to keep our most dangerous citizens locked up.
Senator Katie Britt was elected in 2022.
