Grassroots Coalition Delivers 5,500 Letters in Support of APLS Code Changes
In a sweeping show of grassroots engagement, thousands of Alabama families, faith leaders, and advocacy groups have rallied behind proposed changes to the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) code. The effort, led by Clean Up Alabama in partnership with Fairhope Faith Collective, Eagle Forum, Moms for Liberty, and churches across the state, culminated in the hand-delivery of nearly 5,500 public comment letters-just before the submission deadline.
This surge of civic participation reflects growing public interest in library oversight and content standards, particularly regarding materials available to minors.
✉️ A Groundswell of Support
Of the 8,478 total comments submitted to APLS:
• 6,781 supported the proposed code changes
• 1,697 opposed them
• 65% of all letters submitted not only backed the changes but also called for stronger provisions
The vast majority of submissions were grassroots in origin, with additional letters mailed independently and collected by the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP). Prominent voices like Rev. Greg Davis of ALCAP and Priority Talk Radio, and Phil Williams of Rightside Radio, helped amplify the campaign in its final hours, driving a surge in digital submissions.
🗳️ What's Next?
The APLS board is scheduled to vote on the proposed code changes at its next public meeting:
📅 Thursday, November 20th
🕐 1:00 p.m.
This vote will determine whether the proposed amendments-backed by thousands of Alabamians-are formally adopted into state library policy.
