Senator Katie Britt Backs Legislation to Safeguard SNAP Benefits for 750,000 Alabamians Amid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - October 27, 2025 - U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) has joined Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) in co-sponsoring the Keep SNAP Funded Act, a bill aimed at ensuring uninterrupted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during a federal government shutdown. The legislation would appropriate emergency funding to continue SNAP operations retroactively from the start of the shutdown.

The move comes as the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) warns that approximately 750,000 Alabamians could miss their SNAP benefits next week if the shutdown continues. These benefits provide essential food assistance to low-income individuals and families across the state.

Senator Britt emphasized the urgency of the situation and criticized Senate Democrats for what she described as political maneuvering at the expense of vulnerable Americans. "Democrats could end this shutdown today," Britt said in a statement. "Every day this shutdown continues, Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats continue to prove they couldn't care less about hardworking Americans."

She added that the spending bill currently under debate mirrors legislation previously supported by Democrats during the Biden administration. "They would rather prevent millions of Americans from putting food on the table than support a spending bill identical to one they supported 13 times," Britt said, accusing Democratic leadership of prioritizing donor interests over public welfare.

Britt's office confirmed ongoing coordination with Alabama DHR, which has issued guidance to state offices in preparation for potential disruptions to SNAP services. The senator pledged to remain in close contact with state officials and continue advocating for solutions that minimize the impact on Alabama families.

In addition to supporting the Keep SNAP Funded Act, Britt has also endorsed the Shutdown Fairness Act, introduced by Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.). That bill would ensure continued pay for military personnel and essential federal workers during a shutdown. Senate Democrats blocked the measure last week.

The Keep SNAP Funded Act is part of a broader Republican effort to mitigate the effects of the shutdown on everyday Americans while pressing for a resolution to the budget impasse. With SNAP benefits at risk for millions nationwide, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle face mounting pressure to reach a compromise.

As negotiations continue, Britt reiterated her commitment to putting "hardworking Americans first" and called for bipartisan action to reopen the government and restore critical services.
