Kristin Nelson Wins Republican Nomination in HD-38 Special Primary Runoff

Nelson still faces Democratic opponent in February special general election

November 19, 2025 - CHAMBERS and LEE COUNTIES – Republican voters in portions of Lee and Chambers Counties went to the polls to select their nominee in the House District 38 Special Primary Runoff Election. The election was prompted by the recent vacancy of the seat after former State Representative Debbie Wood who moved to Florida.

Runoff Candidates and Results

The runoff featured two Republican candidates vying for the nomination:

• Garrett Dixon: 1,346 votes (45.55%)

• Kristin Nelson: 1,609 votes (54.45%)

Kristin Nelson emerged victorious, securing a clear majority of the votes and earning the opportunity to represent the Republican Party in the upcoming Special General Election, scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

"Good morning, everyone. Thank you all so much for your love, support, and prayers throughout this first leg of the campaign," said Nelson on Facebook after the win. "I am truly honored and humbled. I can't express what an honor it has been to connect with old friends and make new ones along the way. I look forward to many many more new relationships. I truly love District 38 and am very honored to be your Republican nominee. "Praise be to God, for His mercies are new every morning!" Lamentations 3:22-23"

Official Statement from the Alabama Republican Party

Following the announcement of the unofficial results, Jeannie Burniston, Director of Legislative Affairs and Communications for the Alabama Republican Party, congratulated Nelson, stating:

"Congratulations to Kristin Nelson on a hard‑earned victory. She earned the trust of Republican voters in Lee and Chambers Counties, and we are excited to partner with her as our nominee. Together, we will work to keep House District 38 in Republican hands and ensure strong, conservative leadership for the people of this community."

Nelson is a home school mom and homemaker. Nelson is a lifelong resident of Chambers County. Kristin has served in both public and private sectors, including seven years with the City of Valley in administration and three years as a 3rd-grade teacher at Lanett City Schools. Since 2015 she has been homeschooling her boys through Classical Conversations. She has also served as a tutor and local representative of the program, working to help other families thrive in home school education. In recent years, Kristin has returned to work part-time at Harris Gray LLC. She is a worship leader at Fairfax Methodist Church, Secretary of the Junior Variety Club, President of the EAMC Lanier Auxiliary Board, founder of the Chambers County Young Republicans, and currently serves as Chairman of the Chambers County Republican Party.

Next Steps

With the Republican nominee now determined, attention turns to the Special General Election in February 2026, where Kristin Nelson will face Democrat Hazel Floyd. Floyd – age 21 – is currently unemployed after just finishing college.

The 2026 Legislative session will open with the House District 38 seat vacant until after the February special election.
