Tuberville voices support for ending the filibuster as government shutdown enters third day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 3, 2026 – Once again Senate Democrats have refused to pass a government funding package. The whole fall in Congress was wasted because Democrats refused to fund the government because they were demanding more spending for health care. Government employees went weeks without pay, government offices worked with half staff, hundreds of airplane flights were cancelled, and millions who depend on government SNAP, WIC, and Veterans benefits were fearful that their benefits could run out. A November compromise allowed a continuing resolution to pass to keep the government funded through January 31. Of course no budget passed in January and no new C.R. passed to fund the government moving forward so on Sunday a new government shutdown went into effect. This time some Democrats are refusing to fund the government because they oppose the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to enforce immigration laws.

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) says that it is time to end this cycle of CR crisis after CR crisis and end the Senate filibuster rule.

"Thanks to the MANDATE from 77 million voters, Republicans control the Senate, the House, and the White House," said Senator Tuberville on X. "We already know Democrats will blow up the filibuster the first chance they get. It's past time we get some points on the board and secure WINS for the American people. Nuke the filibuster, pass the SAVE Act, and let's MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN."

Some Republican Senators oppose ending the filibuster because they are concerned that it will be used against conservative states and causes if and when Democrats retake control of the Senate. Tuberville pointed out that Democrats tried to change the rules last time but were thwarted by Senators Sinema and Manchin – neither of whom are still in the Senate.

Meanwhile President Donald J. Trump (R) is continuing to work to try to get a budget deal to end the shutdown.

"I am working hard with Speaker Johnson to get the current funding deal, which passed in the Senate last week, through the House and to my desk, where I will sign it into Law, IMMEDIATELY!" said President Trump on Truth Social. "We need to get the Government open, and I hope all Republicans and Democrats will join me in supporting this Bill, and send it to my desk WITHOUT DELAY. There can be NO CHANGES at this time. We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless, and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly - One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!"

If that compromise deal is passed by the House this partial government shutdown will end this week.

Tuberville is running for governor of Alabama. He faces two relatively unknown GOP opponents in Ken McFeeters and "Alabama" Will Santivasci.
