Dr. Will Boyd will address the Alabama Cannabis Coalition in Montgomery on Tuesday

February 23, 2026 – MONTGOMERY, Ala. – 2026 Democratic candidate for Governor of Alabama Dr. Will Boyd will address Alabama cannabis advocates at the Alabama State house.

Boyd is a Florence pastor, a former city councilman, and regular Democratic candidate.

Boyd came out strong last year against Alabama's psychoactive hemp regulation bill.

"What happened in the Alabama House wasn't just bad policy-it was a direct hit to farmers, patients, veterans, and our economy," said Boyd. "It ignored science and punished small businesses while silencing the will of the people. As governor, I will not let that stand."

Tuesday is the Alabama Cannabis Coalition's 7th Annual Lobby Day at the State House.

As the 2026 Alabama Legislative Session reaches its halfway mark, cannabis policy advocates will gather at the Alabama State House Tuesday.

Citizens from across the state will meet directly with Alabama House and Senate members to discuss current cannabis and hemp-related legislation, regulatory implementation, and policy reform.

Participants will begin the day at 9:00 AM in Room 429 (Overflow Room 418) before heading out in organized groups to engage legislators throughout the day.

Dr. Boyd will deliver his keynote address at 12:05 p.m.

The Alabama Cannabis Coalition is a grassroots pro-marijuana organization that advocates for: implementation of Alabama cannabis law, hemp-related legislation, regulatory oversight, market access and policy reform.

H Marty Schelper is the founder and president of the Alabama Cannabis Coalition.

The ACC has already endorsed Boyd for Governor of Alabama.

"We are deeply honored to have earned your trust and support in our shared fight for justice, smart cannabis reform, and a better, more equitable Alabama," Body said in a statement. "We believe the time is now to end outdated and discriminatory policies-and to build a future where medicine, freedom, and opportunity are available to all."

Boyd's cannabis plan would repeal the smokable hemp ban, raise THC limits, restore online sales, and reduce regulatory barriers.

Boyd released his hemp plan before the federal government passed a nationwide ban on psychoactive cannabinoids derived from hemp. The federal ban goes into effect in November unless Congress changes its position.

He also supports pardons and expungement for low-level marijuana offenses as well as pursuing a ballot initiative or special session to let voters decide the state's cannabis laws directly.

"This plan is more than a policy-it's a promise," Boyd said. "A promise to use every tool I'll have if elected governor to end this ban and deliver real reform," said Boyd.

Boyd spoke to Alabama Gazette lead reporter and content manager Brandon Moseley and Alabama Political Contributor publisher Christopher Peeks on the BCS podcast.

Boyd faces a crowded Democratic primary field that includes: Chad "Chig" Martin, Yolanda Flowers, Rev. JaMel Brown, Nathan Mathis, and former Senator Doug Jones. Jones has raised more money than all the other Democratic candidates combined.

The eventual Democratic nominee will also still have to face the Republican Party nominee.

The likely Republican nominee will be Senator Tommy Tuberville – arguably the most popular politician in the state. No Democrat has won a gubernatorial election in Alabama in this century.

The major party primaries are on May 19.
