Tuberville, Scott Introduce Bill to Crack Down on SNAP Fraud and Abuse

February 23, 2026 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R‑AL) has joined Senator Rick Scott (R‑FL) to introduce the SNAP Data Transparency and Oversight Act, a new bill aimed at strengthening federal oversight of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and curbing fraud, waste, and abuse in state-administered benefits.

The legislation comes in response to reports that some states-including California-have refused to comply with federal enforcement efforts. The bill would require states to provide detailed recipient-level data and case file information to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) upon request, as a condition of participating in SNAP.

"It's important that we ensure these taxpayer-funded benefits are going to those who truly need them," said Senator Tuberville. "I'm proud to join my good friend Senator Rick Scott in this legislation to create more transparency and accountability when it comes to SNAP enforcement."

Senator Scott echoed the urgency of the measure, criticizing states that resist federal oversight.

"The American people are sick and tired of seeing their tax dollars, intended for critical programs like SNAP, completely wasted and abused," said Scott. "Even worse, Democrat-run states like California seem totally fine with being complicit in the fraud instead of allowing the federal government necessary oversight to address it. That should end now."

Key Provisions of the SNAP Data Transparency and Oversight Act

The bill would:

- Require states to provide recipient-level data to the Secretary of Agriculture upon request, transmitted through secure online systems.

- Mandate a 30-day deadline for states to comply with data requests, unless otherwise specified by the Secretary.

- Prohibit noncompliant states from receiving SNAP funds.

- Ensure privacy and security safeguards for all transmitted data.

- Authorize the Secretary to share data with federal or state law enforcement for investigative purposes.

Tuberville's Broader SNAP Reform Agenda

The bill aligns with Senator Tuberville's broader push to reform SNAP and promote self-sufficiency. He has previously spoken with USDA nominees about the importance of transitioning recipients off government assistance and into the workforce. He has also joined colleagues in advocating for healthier food options within the SNAP program.
