Alliance Defending Freedom Files Lawsuit On Behalf Of Tuscaloosa's Eagle Forum

The Tuscaloosa Action Group of Eagle Forum of Alabama has held informative meetings that are open to the public at The Tuscaloosa Public Library. Some of which have been covered by The Alabama Gazette. Now, the ability of the Tuscaloosa Eagle Forum to meet at The Tuscaloosa Public Library is the subject of a federal lawsuit filed by the Alliance Defending Freedom. Due to staff of the Tuscaloosa Public Library denying Eagle Forum access to its meeting space, solely due to its religious character and activity. Eagle Forum is a Christian organization.

Since various groups meet in the Rotary Room of The Tuscaloosa Public Library, for the library to close its doors to Eagle Forum solely due to its Christian affiliation, is particularly egregious. In fact, Alliance Defending Freedom's Senior Counsel, Travis Barham, states that, "The Tuscaloosa Public Library can't close its meeting spaces to religious groups like Eagle Forum while swinging them wide open to every manner of secular organizations. Such religious discrimination blatantly violates the Constitution."

Becky Garritson, the executive director of Eagle Forum states that the "Tuscaloosa Public Library has no right to lock us out of its publicly available meeting space just because library staff may disagree with our views on politics or religion." In fact, Eagle Forum of Alabama has had a presence in Alabama since it was established in 1986 as a state chapter of the national Eagle Forum organization. An organization that was founded by Phyllis Schlafly and champions God, family, and country.

The Tuscaloosa Action Group of Eagle Forum is co-led by Linda Berty and Bela Berty. With Bela Berty frequently presenting in the Tuscaloosa area on his family's experience escaping from Hungary while it was under Communist rule when he was but a young child. And the couple frequently making presentations about the Biblical origins of the American system of government such as the three-pronged executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.

The lawsuit filed by Alliance Defending Freedom on behalf of Eagle Forum is filed in the Northern District of Alabama, Western Division. And is focused on protecting the First Amendment rights of organizations such as Eagle Forum. Since under the Constitutions there is no basis for discrimination against Christian organizations.
