Governor Ivey Awards $7.6 Million in Rebuild Alabama Grants for 26 Local Road Projects

MONTGOMERY - May 7, 2026 - Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that more than $7.6 million in state transportation funding is being awarded to 26 city and county road projects across Alabama, marking the first round of 2026 grants under the state's Rebuild Alabama Act.

The funding comes through the Alabama Department of Transportation's Annual Grant Program, which was created as part of the 2019 Rebuild Alabama Act. The law requires ALDOT to set aside at least $10 million each year from the state's share of gas tax revenue specifically for local infrastructure improvements.

This year, the Ivey administration is going beyond the minimum requirement, committing $15 million in total Annual Grant Program funding - $5 million more than the law mandates. Additional awards will be announced later in 2026.

Ivey: "We are delivering results you can see mile after mile"

Governor Ivey emphasized that the grants reflect her administration's ongoing push to strengthen infrastructure in all 67 counties.

"If you are driving from one place to the next in our state, it is hard not to spot a blue Rebuild Alabama sign along the way," Ivey said. "These grants are giving our local communities the support they need to take on critical projects. We are going to keep delivering results you can see mile after mile across our state."

Local Governments Contribute Matching Funds

In addition to the state's $7.6 million investment, local governments are contributing more than $1.9 million in matching funds.

All awarded projects must begin within one year of receiving funding.

Rebuild Alabama's Growing Impact

Since the Rebuild Alabama Act was passed in 2019, ALDOT's Annual Grant Program has awarded over $78 million to local governments for road and bridge improvements. The program has become a central pillar of the state's long‑term infrastructure strategy, with projects underway from the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf Coast.

The newly announced 2026 projects include resurfacing, safety upgrades, drainage improvements, and other critical repairs aimed at improving local mobility and reducing long‑term maintenance costs.
