May 29, 2026 - TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Kristy Lynn Adkins, 43, died from her injuries following a deputy-involved shooting in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, after her brother allegedly pointed a replica firearm over her shoulder at law enforcement.
The incident, which occurred on the morning of May 28, 2026, has resulted in manslaughter charges against her brother, 36-year-old Ricky Adkins, who remains hospitalized with critical injuries.
A routine warrant service turned fatal in Tuscaloosa County on Thursday morning, leaving a local woman dead and her brother facing a manslaughter charge from his hospital bed. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) confirmed that 43-year-old Kristy Lynn Adkins (also identified in initial reports as Christie Adkins) was killed during a confrontation between deputies and her brother, Ricky Adkins.
The Confrontation on Gladys Drive
According to investigators, deputies with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrived at a property in the 13000 block of Gladys Drive in Vance, Alabama, to serve a felony warrant on Ricky Adkins. Upon surveying the property, deputies located a tent pitched behind the primary residence. When deputies approached the tent, Kristy Adkins met them at the entrance. Authorities state that she initially attempted to conceal her brother's identity. Deputies discovered Ricky Adkins inside the tent wearing a face covering and ordered him to remove it.
Instead of complying, Ricky Adkins allegedly drew what appeared to be a black handgun, pointing it directly at deputies over his sister's shoulder.
Fatal Gunfire and the "Indistinguishable" Weapon
Perceiving an immediate threat to their lives, Tuscaloosa County deputies fired their department-issued service weapons into the tent. The volley of gunfire struck both siblings. No law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange.
Emergency responders from the Lakeview Fire District and local paramedics rushed to the scene. Kristy Adkins suffered fatal wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Ricky Adkins was struck multiple times, sustaining severe, life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, where he remains on breathing support.
A subsequent forensic sweep of the scene by the VCU revealed that the weapon Ricky Adkins brandished was not an operable firearm. Investigators determined it was a pellet or BB gun designed to mirror a standard semi-automatic handgun-a replica that authorities described as completely "indistinguishable" from a functioning firearm.
Investigation and Manslaughter Charges
Because the incident involved an active shooting by sheriff's deputies, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office immediately recused itself from the criminal probe. Independent investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit took total control of the investigation.
Following a comprehensive review of the physical evidence, witness statements, and deputy body-worn camera footage, investigators consulted with the local District Attorney's office. On Thursday evening, the VCU announced it had obtained a warrant for manslaughter against Ricky Adkins.
"Mr. Adkins created the circumstances that led to Ms. Adkins' death. Due to this, the warrant was obtained," the Violent Crimes Unit said in a public statement.
The manslaughter warrant will be formally served upon his release from medical custody.
A Family Left Shattered
The tragedy has left the Adkins family reeling as they grapple with the sudden death of Kristy and the critical condition of Ricky.
Speaking with local reporters from WBRC Fox 6 News, the siblings' stepfather, Phillip Atchinson, expressed immense grief and called for clarity as the body camera footage is processed. Phillip Atchinson, the siblings' stepfather, expressed profound grief and a need for clarity, according to WBRC Fox 6 News.
