May 22, 2026 – MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Candidate qualifying for the August 11 special Democratic primary closed at 5:00 p.m.
The Democratic nominees in District 1, 2, and 7 are set as only candidate qualified in those three districts.
US Representative, 1st District - Clyde Jones
US Representative, 2nd District - Shomari C. Figures
US Representative, 7th District - Terri Sewell
In Congressional District 6 four candidates qualified for the Democratic primary:
US Representative, 6th District - Jacob Bouma-Sims
US Representative, 6th District - Ashtyn Kennedy
US Representative, 6th District - Maurice Mercer
US Representative, 6th District - Keith Pilkington
Keith Pilkington had been the only Democrat to qualify in CD6 for the May 19 primary so has been planning a general election run. Now he has to change gears and prepare for a four-way primary battle in just 11 weeks.
Due to the compressed schedule, there is no time for a runoff, so whoever has the most votes wins the primary even if that if fewer than 50%.
Figures faces a radically redrawn district if the federal courts allows Alabama to adopt the 2023 map that the Republican dominated Legislature adopted. Figures home county of Mobile is no longer in the district. CD2 also picks up Republican dominated communities including: Dothan, Prattville, Enterprise, and Millbrook. CD2 goes from being 48% Black and a 98% likely chance of electing a Democrat to just 28% Black and Republican leaning. Despite this, Figures has remained in the race.
Both Democratic Congressional incumbents were able to make it through the process without drawing a primary opponent.
The special primary election is scheduled for August 2.
