"Young Washington" Exceeds Box Office Expectations So A Sequel Is Planned

"Young Washington", the full-length feature film about the early days of George Washington, opened in movie theaters over the Fourth of July weekend. It was predicted to bring in $15 million at the box office, however, it brought in a third more than was predicted and took in $20 million at the box office. An impressive accomplishment since the movie debuted over the weekend in just 2,700 movie screens across the country instead of the usual 4,000 for major new releases.

The $20 million in box office receipts makes "Young Washington" the largest three-day opening weekend for a live action title for Angel Studios. Prompting the Alabama-born director, Jon Erwin, to announce from Mount Vernon that a sequel is already planned. With the working title of the sequel to "Young Washington" being "1776". According to Director Erwin, "1776" will be a big Revolutionary War epic that continues the story of George Washingon. Erwin has just begun writing the screenplay for it, so there is no official movie release date or even filming date for "1776" announced, as of yet. But, Erwin's excitement about the planned historical war epic is evident in his announcement via Instagram.

While mainstream movie critics gave "Young Washington" mindbogglingly low marks and Hollywood tried to shun the film, general audiences are very pleased with "Young Washington" and have given it an "A" rating in movie reviews. In fact, it is considered that "Young Washington" is remarkable in that it is a movie geared towards what is termed "Middle America" and middle America turned out for the film. With "Young Washington" being well received in the Mountain, Midwest, Southcentral and deep South regions of the USA. As those regions drove 67% of the movie's weekend earnings. Typically, with big blockbuster weekend movies, the top grossing movie theaters are AMC Burbank in Los Angeles or AMC Lincoln Center in New York City. By contrast, with "Young Washington", the top grossing movie theater over the weekend was the Megaplex 18 Thanksgiving Point in Utah.

Overall, "Young Washington" came in third over the weekend for box office earnings. As "Minions & Monster" came in first with over $36 million in earnings in over 4,000 screens and "Toy Story 5" came in second with $31 million in earnings on close to 4,000 screens. On the Fourth of July, itself, "Young Washington" was number two in domestic box office earnings, topping "Toy Story 5". With "Young Washington" actually being the number one movie over the Fourth of July weekend in 28 states of the USA.

Another point of significance with regards to "Young Washington" is that the over 55 years of age crowd comprised a sizeable portion of the film's movie goers. As 47% of the audiences who went to the movie theater to see "Young Washington" belong in that demographic. A demographic which has been spending more time at home since the pandemic era and slow to venture forth in public spaces after the Covid-19 epidemic.

The Minnesota-born actor, Chris Pratt, who does not have a role in "Young Washington" was nevertheless so impressed by the film that he is urging people to go see the film on his social media pages. Describing "Young Washington" as the "Braveheart" for Americans.
