Election Interference: Tabitha Isner and the Alabama Democratic Party's Reckless Play

Party registration first appeared on the legislative agenda last session; I held my reluctance and did not support such measures at the time. Even though I have never cast a ballot in a Democratic primary, my first thought: people should have the right to participate in whichever one they choose. A voter might support a friend running in a specific race, and that serves as reason enough to select that ballot. We also have independents; why should they change party affiliation each election year to vote in a different contest?

My thoughts shifted in the last few days when vice chair of the Alabama Democratic Party Tabitha Isner-who describes herself as a "public figure" on her profile-took action. Adding that label to your name feels like a person who introduces themselves by saying, "I'm very important," completely unaware that nobody outside their own orbit knows who they are, or for that matter, cares. If she truly possessed half the importance she believes she holds-instead of merely playing the part of a local celebrity in her own mind-the landscape might look different. But, I digress.

In a recent Facebook post, Isner publicly called for Democrats to participate in the August 11th primary to pick a Republican they think they can defeat in the fall.

Although the circumstances differ, the 1986 Democratic runoff provides a cautionary tale. Then-Attorney General Charlie Graddick encouraged Republicans to cross over and vote in the Democratic runoff to secure his victory against Lieutenant Governor Bill Baxley following a contentious primary battle. This maneuver, which prioritized a candidate's short-term gain over established party rules, ultimately triggered the demise of the Alabama Democratic Party.

Isner's call is tantamount to election interference and further represents what a miscreant she is. Hopefully, this emboldens Republicans to turn out and show her that liberals will not influence a Republican matchup.

We cannot allow this. Do not allow this "public figure" to receive that satisfaction. She is making her endorsements to her minions as we speak; GOP voters, you know exactly who to vote against. Rock the vote.
