A massive, four-month-long collaborative law enforcement investigation culminated in a series of simultaneous raids across East Gadsden, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of trafficking-level illicit drugs.
Federal, state, and local law enforcement leaders gathered Friday, August 7, 2026, at the Etowah County Sheriff's Office to announce the successful execution of a multi-agency sweep aimed at removing high-level criminals from local neighborhoods.
Operation Overview
The coordinated operation took place on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, following four months of intensive planning and intelligence gathering. Roughly 10 law enforcement agencies simultaneously descended on approximately eight locations in East Gadsden, including several homes and a local hotel.
The sweep resulted in eight individuals taken into custody, five of whom face severe drug trafficking charges.
Officials confirmed the seizure of high-liability contraband during the raids, including:
1.1 pounds (approx. one pound) of fentanyl
Multiple firearms
Several vehicles
More than $8,000 in cash
Leadership Praises Unified Front
During the Friday morning press conference, leaders emphasized that coordinated, multi-jurisdictional actions are crucial to combating violent crime and drug distributed networks.
Etowah County District Attorney Jody Willoughby set a stern tone for individuals looking to exploit local communities. "We're here to send a message that if you're going to deal fentanyl and put this stuff on our streets, we're coming for you," Willoughby declared, adding that the cases will be aggressively prosecuted at both the state and federal levels.
U.S. Attorney Phillip W. Williams Jr. of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama stood alongside local partners to reaffirm the Department of Justice's commitment to surging federal resources into regional lockups.
David R. Fitzgibbons, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Birmingham Field Office, reiterated that targeting drug distribution networks is a direct investment in neighborhood safety. "This collaborative effort reflects our ongoing commitment to keeping our communities safe and supporting the law enforcement professionals who work tirelessly every day," Fitzgibbons remarked.
Individuals ChargedDistrict Attorney Willoughby identified five primary suspects facing significant charges, including drug trafficking, following the investigation. Those charged include Zuquavius Clay (34), Demetrie Borden (33), Alexis Buchanan (36), David Coats (35), and Larry Smith Jr. (27).
The operation was supported by a coalition of agencies, including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Etowah County Sheriff's Office, the Gadsden Police Department, and the Oxford Police Department. Officials concluded by encouraging community members to report suspicious activity to aid in future efforts against local drug operations.
